This is the same reciprocating bilge pump design E.J. Willis has supplied to the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard for generations — historically listed in the federal supply system under NSN 4320-01-272-3909. It draws water on both the up and down stroke, so a steady hand clears a flooding bilge twice as fast as a single-action pump.
Every component — outer and inner barrel, top and bottom castings, D-handle, strainer, valve fitting, packing nut, brass ball — is cast in brass and finished by hand. The flange and cup washers are leather, specially treated for salt water service. The double-hose design keeps the pump clear of engine grease. Properly maintained, it will serve for decades: drain it before storage, strip and clean it twice a year, and keep the leather flange washer lubricated.
This pump made its public debut at the WoodenBoat Show in Mystic — and stopped more people on the dock than anything else on the table. We knew then it belonged front and center.
